People zoom in to 100, 200, 400% and then freak out if the image isn't super sharp. IMO, this is manufacturers' response to the incredibly overly critical review of digital images, made possible only because it's so easy now to view our images at ridiculously high magnifications on our computer monitors. Sigma is now offering some lenses that you can calibrate, too.

MFA is just provided so that users can do much of it themselves and avoid having to send their gear in for service. It is possible for lenses and cameras to be calibrated and adjusted by professional techs to give peak autofocus performance. MFA is sort of the "sprinkles on top of the icing on the cupcake". (Note: 7DII and some other more recent models now use MFA "2.0", which can be used with up to 40 lenses, allows for two adjustments on zooms, and is lens-serial-number-specific so you could have different adjustments for different EF 50/1.4 USM lenses, for example.) It also is lens-model-specific, so if you were to adjust an EF 50/1.4 USM lens on the camera, the exact same adjustment would be applied to all EF 50/1.4 USM lenses used on the camera.

This allows up to 20 lenses to be adjusted and one adjustment per lens (even zooms). Your 7D has the first version of Canon Micro Focus Adjust (MFA). Really large aperture and/or longer focal length lenses, both where DoF can be really shallow, is when calibration can be most important. Depth of field will hide minor focus errors. If you shoot with the lens stopped down much of the time, you likely will see little benefit from it. No big deal, really.Īs to lens calibration, it isn't always needed. also be sure your battery is fully charged so camera won't accidentally shut down in mid-update, which takes about 5 minutes at most. this is to be sure you got a complete download, but I have to say I've never had a problem.

fir file after you download and unzip it. you just need to follow the instructions carefully. Updating camera firmware is really simple.
